Franca Alphin provides excellent
oversight for Fitness Forward in the areas of nutrition, healthy
cooking and shopping, weight management and athletic performance.
She will also guide Fitness Forward in preventing eating disorders
in youth and promoting healthy weight balance. Franca is an
Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Community
and Family Medicine, and the Student Health Dietitian, who
has worked at Duke for over 15 years.
She has an Associate Degree in
medical technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Community
Nutrition from the University of Maryland. Franca received
her Master’s degree in Public Health Nutrition from
the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1989. Franca
is a registered and licensed dietitian and gourmet cook. She
is also a member of the advisory boards of Fitness and Bottom
Line Health magazines.
Franca has spent much of her career
working on issues relating to weight management, sports performance
and disordered eating. In addition to her above mentioned
appointments she is also the Chief Dietitian for the Duke
Sports Performance Program. Currently she spends much of her
time working on promoting good health at Duke. Franca is very
actively involved with the media in promoting messages about
good health and nutrition through television, magazines and
newspapers, and works closely with Duke Dining Services.
